At
the place where the Olympic spirit was born lies
a long and level rectangular area with a length
of 212 meters from west to east surrounded on all
sides by natural embankments or artificial man-made
slopes. This rectangular setting, or stadion, provided
room for a host of barefooted young men, or stadiodromos,
to compete in 192 meter sprints (approximately
600 ft.) in full view of up to 45,000 spectators
and as many as ten supremely powerful judges known
as Hellanodikai (guardians of the law). Beginning
in 776 B.C. and continuing for an astounding period
of more than eleven-hundred years in which 287
successive competitions were held, the Olympic
Games called this place home.
The
Stadion at The Monument of the Immortals, a precise
replication of the original dimensions of the ancient
Stadion, serves as an elongated plaza which immediately
introduces the visitor to the sweeping dimensions
of the entire facility, providing breathtaking
panoramic views of the extended horizon as it nestles
softly between adjacent rolling hillsides.
The
defining feature of the Monument, the sunken Incurvature
where the names of 27,000 Olympic victors shall
be inscribed, resides at the distant end of the
Stadion and comes into full view as the visitor
makes his way deeper into the plaza. With the Incurvature
and horizon to the fore, the expansive Great Hall
to the left and imposing Museum of Olympian Truce
to the right, the Stadion also serves to form a
subtle yet distinct connection among these primary
features of the Monument.

Incurvature

LEVEL Contribution: $50,000
SILVER LEVEL Contribution:
$25,000
BRONZE LEVEL Contribution:
$10,000
The
sunken Incurvature, formed by the weight of an
imaginary earth as it rests upon the eastern
end of the Stadion, will be the defining feature
of the Monument. Within the Incurvature, the
names of 27,000 victors from both the Ancient
Olympics and Modern Games will be inscribed,
dating back to 776 B.C.
The
inscriptions themselves shall be individually cast
in ingots of molten glass, a substance born of
earth and fire and one of the most enduring materials
known to man. Each inscription shall bear the name
and country of the victor written in the language
of his or her origin, as well as reference to the
location of the numbered Olympiad in which he or
she competed. Each ingot shall also bear a universal
pictogram denoting the sport in which the victorious
athlete competed.
As
each victor was considered to be held in equal
esteem in the eyes of the gods, placement of ingots
shall be at an equal distance from the center of
the imaginary sphere. Additionally, the entirety
of ingots shall be set in the pattern of an ever-expanding
Archimedean screw, working outward in a ceaseless
expansion of names.
During
the evening five floodlights shall reach into the
heavens, one for each of the five Olympic continents.
Using Morse Code, an additional beam shall transmit
into the cosmos the names of Olympian victors both
ancient and modern, thus realizing their stature
as Immortals who shall forever remain “In Touch
With Eternity.”
Gold,
Silver, and Bronze level patrons of this hallowed
space shall be recognized in permanent mounted
wall plaques, visible to all who enter.

Instrumental
to maintaining a comfortable indoor environment
during a protracted dry and hot summer season where
in August the average daytime temperature soars
to 92¾F (33¾C), the Energy & Climate Control
System at the Monument shall be driven by a massive
underground natural ventilation chimney, or ‘thermal
fan,’ which makes use of simple heat exchange through
earthen ducts at opposite ends of the property.
In the wet winter season, where average daytime
temperatures dip to a low of 52¾F (11¾C), the collection
of rainfall in insulated groundwater cisterns provides
for fresh water throughout the year and critical
evaporative cooling during the summer. For all
off-grid electrical requirements, facade-integrated
solar cells will supply endless streams of energy
for heating, air conditioning and indoor ventilation.

inventory identification, placement, and movement
technologies, including product tracking devices,
storage and retrieval systems, and labeling, containerization,
and palletizing devices. All requisite Shipping & Receiving
functions shall be performed in this facility as
well, including pick and pack and FedEx/UPS shipping
integration.

The
Monument Café shall be a triumph of what is called ‘spoliation’ — the
incorporation of old fragments in a new structure — a
historically common practice in Mediterranean architecture.
Using old and new materials and technology, intimate
yet airy spaces are created so that patrons can
be both spectator of, and participant in, the bustling
activity of the Monument. Uninterrupted windows
shall create the feeling of openness, but a superimposed
grille of wooden laths shelters the more intimate
café spaces from too much light during the day
and intrusive viewing at night. This technique
also allows the building’s character to change
subtly. At night, the light glows out through the
screens, creating an inviting refuge. Daytime,
the more formal, graphic quality makes for an entirely
unique design statement.

the office area shall facilitate and promote communication
and collaboration among the cadre of knowledge
workers who comprise the full range of management,
technical and administrative elements of the professional
leadership team.

a five-color press with perfecting unit will be
used for the production of general commercial work.
For the production of printed books, newsletters,
catalogs, fliers, and posters, a six-color press
with plate processor will be employed. For bindery
services, publications staff will utilize state-of-the-art
continuous feed digital folding machinery and advanced
perfecting, coating, knifing & cutting units.

The
Plant Operations Center controls and operates all
internal communication and premises security technologies,
including a centrexed telephone network and centralized
building control system. The Center also prioritizes
pending maintenance requests and performs appropriate
corrective action as required, as well as scheduling
all deferred maintenance (the accumulated backlog
of physical plant improvements to mitigate the
influence of age, use, and normal wear and tear),
facilities renewal (the systematic repair or replacement
of major building subsystems to extend the life
of the facility), and facilities adaptation (alteration
of the physical plant to address changes in use,
codes, or building standards).

Whether
for a moment of personal reflection, a setting
for students to read and discuss some of their
experiences at the Monument, or admiring the artistry
of landscape architects whose work reflects a keen
appreciation for natural flora of the region, the
Serenity Gardens shall offer a peaceful and contemplative
ambience in the midst of bustling activity at the
Monument. These private and secluded outdoor spaces
will surround much of the perimeter of the Monument,
providing visitors with the rarest of opportunities
to experience vicariously this rustic setting as
it once might have been, nestled serenely among
the rolling hills of Ancient Olympia.

More
often than not themselves retired athletes with
some degree of practical experience in anatomy,
nutrition, and physiotherapy, coaches and trainers
have long occupied an inestimable place in the
path to fame and good fortune among their charges.
From ancient times, when the achievements of Olympian
victors reflected an equivalent glory upon their
mentors, to the modern era where similar acclaim
is seldom awarded, the helping and healing hands
of coaches and trainers have brought forth the
absolute best from more than one million Olympic
competitors. In honor of this selfless dedication
to the athletes under their tutelage, the Monument
sets aside this simple space in lasting tribute.

$25,000
BRONZE LEVEL Contribution:
$10,000
Unique
to The Monument of the Immortals will be a room
honoring those athletes who qualified for Olympic
competition but whose governments ultimately chose
to prohibit their participation. Absent the impetus
of ancient Olympic Truce, the Modern Games have
thrice been cancelled and five times witnessed
some degree of international boycott. Whether a
function of world war, historical enmity or political
reprisal between nations, or in opposition to or
appeasement of repressive policies of totalitarian
regimes, as many as 25,000 athletes from more than
100 countries have paid the ultimate price for
unresolved international discord. Their absence
from the Olympic record shall at long last find
redress here in the ancestral home of the games
themselves.

and specialty gift items for all ages and interests.
Fully equipped for the accurate and efficient exchange
of international currencies, the Gift Shop shall
employ the latest in interactive computer software
for on-site replication of original gift items
including stylized glass ingots upon which the
names of Olympian victors have been inscribed.

GOLD
LEVEL Contribution: $50,000
SILVER LEVEL Contribution:
$25,000
BRONZE LEVEL Contribution:
$10,000
The
Point of Entry Station is intended as a kinetic
landmark, a building which lives and modifies itself
by expanding or contracting according to visitor
demand and time of day. Purchasing tickets is presented
as a theatrical experience and considered an event
in its own right. The split-line system serves
to keep lines organized, informed, and entertained
along the moving LED Ticket Tape Information Band
set into the pavement stretching along both sides
of the island. Clear and translucent glass planes
exploit the natural light of the adjacent Stadion
(or Plaza), so the booths are continuously transformed
from solid to transparent to reflective of neighboring
artworks as the lines move past them. At twilight,
artificial light adds to complexities of perception.

while featuring a host of amenities, the Private
Reception Area shall accommodate festive social
gatherings both large and small.

systems and protect transaction histories while
providing comprehensive authentication, authorization,
and encryption safeguards.

A
series of strategically placed power-amplified
aluminum speakers surrounding the Stadion shall
provide an outlet for patterns of sound to remind
visitors to the Monument of soothing natural settings.
The electronic and acoustic reverberations generally
associated with outdoor amphitheaters will be mitigated
by a state-of-the-art time delay system which minimizes
naturally occurring echoes, and two-way mini-monitor
speakers in the concession, exhibition, and restroom
areas shall insure an uninterrupted listening experience
for all guests. Sound artists shall be regularly
invited to compose music using the theme “In Touch
